20 May International Clinical Trials Day: ATM clinical trials registry launches new interface

Published on 20 May 2009

Today is International Clinical Trials Day. This auspicious date celebrates the day that James Lind started his famous trial back in 1747. Since the public health challenges of clinical research are not limited to a single nation, the transnational communication on clinical trials requires initiation and coordination by a transnational organisation, having the objective to facilitate better clinical research, relevant to the needs of patients everywhere. The first International Clinical Trials' Day was launched in 2005 by the European Clinical Research Infrastructures Network (ECRIN, a pan-European Infrastructure for clinical trials) to stimulate debates between representatives of European patients associations, clinical scientists, scientific agencies, industry sponsors, ethics committees, competent authorities, trials registries, medical journal editors, the EU Commission, and news media in order to improve the patients' and public awareness on the challenges raised by clinical research.

EDCTP expresses its support for this day and is committed to an integrated approach of strengthening clinical trials, networking and capacity development in sub-Saharan Africa. One of the initiatives taken and that is being highlighted on this day is the AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Clinical Trial Registry (ATMCTR). This is a registry of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria trials conducted in Africa, and is an African initiative serving the needs of Africans. The ATM registry has launched a new interface, which makes registering a clinical trial easier as the registry is now more accessible and easier to navigate.
