In July 2009, EDCTP commissioned the Swiss Centre for International Health at the Swiss Tropical Institute to undertake an internal assessment of the EDCTP programme covering the period from its inception in 2003 to 2009. The goal of the assessment was to gauge the progress that EDCTP had made by the end of 2009 and to collect views on the future direction.

From 1 January 2010, EDCTP governance of North-North networking will change. Until 31 December 2010, European Networking Officers (ENOs) were in charge of these activities, and they were united in the European Network of National Programmes (ENNP). This Network of representatives of the European national programmes developed proposals to coordinate and join national research activities and funding.

The year 2010 is taking off very well as the EDCTP-funded Networks of Excellence for Western, Eastern, Central and Southern Africa all have their contracts signed. This means that every sub-Saharan African region has its own network for enhancing the infrastructure and know-how to conduct clinical trials on infectious diseases. Nature Medicine published an article on the Networks in its January 2010 edition.

The members of the General Assembly of the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) have elected Professor Hannah Akuffo as its Chair as of 1 January 2010. Prof. Akuffo succeeds Dr Diana Dunstan, who has chaired the Assembly between 2006 and 2009. Dr Gabriele Hausdorf was appointed and Professor Patrice Debré re-appointed as vice-Chair.
