Clinical Trials Registry

Pan African Clinical Trials Registry

The Pan African Clinical Trials Registry (PACTR) is an African initiative that provides a platform where clinical trials can be registered. In addition, it also hosts a searchable, electronic database of completed and planned trials, and trials currently in progress.

Partners
EDCTP provided the start-up funds for PACTR, which is currently based at The South African Cochrane Centre (SACC) located at the South African Medical Research Council (MRC).

The registry is working in collaboration with The Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group (CIDG) (based at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine), the Cochrane HIV/AIDS Group (based at the University of San Francisco and the SACC), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Stakeholders
The Pan African Clinical Trials Registry serves a number of key stakeholders including researchers, clinical trial funders and sponsors, development organisations, policy makers, health professionals and the general public.

Trial flagging system
A trial flagging system in the fourth phase of the PACTR database is also being implemented. The flagging system that has been developed will allow the database administrators to mark trials that are retrospectively registered – this means that those trials we have previously denied registry numbers due to the timing of their application, will now be permitted to register their trial. In addition, the registry working group has made the decision in consultation with WHO, and the PACTR advisory group to expand their remit to accept all phases of trials (0 – 4) including pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic studies.

GIS mapping component
PACTR is developing a Global Information Systems (GIS) mapping component on their database. This interactive map provides a visual display of trial locations, as they are registered, according to the coordinates of the cities listed as recruitment centres. The map is fully searchable, so that users can isolate disease types being researched, trial titles, intervention type (prevention, treatment, education, diagnosis, support), country, city, recruitment status and site type (single centre, multi centre/multi nation, multi centre/single nation).

The child strategy
In synergy with the broader scope of clinical trials registration, the PACTR has embarked on a project to develop a strategy to achieve the increased registration of clinical trials recruiting children in Africa. This is part of a larger World Health Organization initiative to increase registration and activity of child-focused trials throughout the world.

How to register a trial
Trials may be registered online at www.pactr.org, via email, facsimile or postal mail. Trial registration is free.
