Images have a unique capacity to present both the human face and the practical reality of the complex world of clinical trials. For this reason, EDCTP invites all those working or collaborating in EDCTP-funded projects to enter photographs for the First EDCTP photo contest. This is a continuation of the First EDCTP Photo Contest launched in August 2011.
Through this contest EDCTP wants to capture different perspectives of the many research, capacity building and networking activities in the implementation of these projects.
Visual documentation of EDCTP-funded activities is a way to recognise the efforts of all those who contribute to projects: researchers, professional staff, volunteers and patients alike. Subsequently, EDCTP intends to use these photographs for sharing information and advocacy.
Submissions will be judged in three categories: Science, Healthcare and Capacity development and networking. A winner will be identified for each category. The winners, who give consent, will have their photographs used and recognised in EDCTP publications (including website, reports, newsletter and a photo book). In addition, winners will each receive a prize. The closing date for entry is 16 April 2012.
Who may enter?
All those working or collaborating in an EDCTP-funded project can take part in the photography contest. These may include project coordinators, collaborators, data managers, supervisors, assistants, laboratory technicians, nurses, MSc/PhD/Career Development students etc.
What to enter?
Photographs submitted to this contest should present human action and interaction in the context of clinical trials and research projects. Photographs will be judged in three categories:
- Science: photographs should document and highlight the research aspect of particularly (but not exclusively) clinical trials. This may include for example a researcher or member(s) of research teams working in a clinic or laboratory setting, or out in the field during home visits or volunteer follow up
- Healthcare: entries should highlight interaction between researchers or health workers with patients and/or volunteers in clinical trials. This interaction may take place in clinics, hospitals, mobile clinics or other parts of a research set up
- Capacity development and networking: photographs for this category should capture sharing of information, action images depicting knowledge and skills transfer during on-site training and workshop activities.
How to enter?
The contest entry form and photographs must be submitted electronically either through the online Photo contest entry form, or through email to photocontest[at]edctp.org with Photo Entry form (Word format) and photographs attached. Larger files (above 10MB) should be sent via sharing websites such as YouSendIt. EDCTP will not accept photographs submitted any other way.
Technical requirements: high-quality scanned files of non-digital photographs are accepted. Digital photographs must be in JPEG or JPG format with minimum resolution of 1600 pixels (vertical and horizontal).
A participant may and is encouraged to submit photos for one or more categories. For each entry form, a minimum of 3 photographs will be allowed. Each submitted photograph must be documented precisely. This includes information on EDCTP project code, place and year the photograph was taken, a short description of what is documented and, if relevant, the name(s) of person(s) portrayed. Participants
If you require any assistance with the submission of your photo, please contact us at photocontest[at]edctp.org.
Entry deadline
The deadline for entries is 16 April 2012. Entries without proper documentation or which do not comply with the technical requirements above are not eligible.
Judging and recognition
After the deadline a selection of photographs for each category will be made. This selection will be published on the EDCTP website by 30 April 2012. The selection committee of the photo contest will select a winner in each of the three categories of Science, Healthcare and Capacity Development and networking. Photographs will be assessed on creativity, composition and quality of the image.
