EDCTP approves € 80 M of funding to boost HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria research

The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) has approved over € 80 million for research into prevention of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa. This sum is the highest amount of EDCTP funding approved to date. The approval marks an increase of European investment in research into the three poverty-related diseases and is expected to significantly enhance cooperation between European and African researchers.

EDCTP stand at Geneva Health Forum 2008

From 25-28 May, the Geneva Health Forum 2008 Towards global access to Health takes place in the CICG conference centre. The forum brings together on an equal basis all actors involved in access to health. Under the flags of equity, partnership, and capacity building, it strives to link policies and guidelines to actual practice in the field.

EDCTP joins forces to fight malaria

25 April 2008 marks the first commemoration of World Malaria Day, a day established in March 2007 at the Sixtieth World Health Assembly. It replaces Africa Malaria Day, which has been commemorated every year on 25 April since 2001. This day we commemorate the global effort to provide effective control of malaria around the world and to increase global awareness of this disease as a global scourge that is preventable and curable.

Launch of Project Profiles database

EDCTP is excited to announce the launch of its Project Profiles database. This online database contains summaries for all EDCTP-funded projects, and a range of search options to find any selection of projects requested. In the database, each project has its own summary,with an additional fact sheet on the project in layout that is easy to print. Currently, the database contains detailed information for the projects that were signed before 2007, but it will soon also include more elaborate information on the projects that were signed after that.

EDCTP offers € 5 M for research integration

EDCTP launches a call for proposals worth € 5 M, which will serve to integrate and complement research carried out by EDCTP Member States and their African partners on HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa. With this call, EDCTP invites member states to link their national research activities on the three poverty-related diseases (PRDs) and offers a financial contribution to top up available funds. EDCTP believes that such collaboration between EDCTP member states and African partners increases the efficiency of research into the three PRDs and that it will be a powerful tool for avoiding duplication.

EDCTP joins the world in stopping TB

On this year’s World TB Day EDCTP joins the world by expressing its commitment of reducing poverty in developing countries by fighting TB. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one-third of the world population is infected by the bacterium that causes TB, and that the majority of new TB cases occur in developing countries, especially in South-east Asia and in sub-Saharan Africa. Both the highest number of deaths and the highest mortality per capita are in Africa, although there is evidence that the epidemic in Africa has been slowing in the recent years and now appears to have stabilised or begun to fall. On the other hand, HIV is fuelling the TB epidemic and in Africa. HIV is the single most important factor contributing to the increase in incidence of TB since 1990. In some areas, control efforts are complicated by a dangerous form of drug-resistant TB that is multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR TB).
