Start of Phase II trial of intravenous artesunate for children with severe malaria

A multicentre Phase II trial of intravenous artesunate will begin recruitment of patients in September. The €5.3 M trial, funded by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), and sponsored by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) will be conducted in Gabon and Malawi. It will evaluate the efficacy of two intravenous artesunate dosing regimens in clearing Plasmodium falciparum parasites in children with severe malaria. The trial protocol has been approved by the ethics committees and national regulatory authorities in Malawi and Gabon.

Regional Training/Workshop on in-house HIV Viral Load Assay for East, Central & Southern Africa

Through funding provided by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), The Viral Load group in the Viral Diseases Programme of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratories in Banjul, Gambia is organizing a one-week Training/Workshop in the use of their in-house HIV viral load assay.

European Commission concludes mid-term review of EDCTP

The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) welcomes the report of the independent expert group commissioned by the European Commission (EC) to review its operation. The view of the expert group is that EDCTP constitutes a true partnership between Europe and Africa in medical research and fulfils its primary mission to improve health on the African continent by strengthening the local research base as well as linking European scientists and institutions in the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

Irish Aid grants EDCTP 1.25 million euros

EDCTP is pleased to announce that Irish Aid has decided to support EDCTP with incremental core funding for 2007 and 2008. The aim of this funding is to promote a practical integration of European research activities on poverty-related diseases, advance EU economic interests and to contribute to Irish Aid's delivery of its international development agenda. EUR 500 000 will be made available to EDCTP for 2007 and EUR 750 000 for 2008. EUR 100 000 of this funding will be available for funding successful projects submitted to the two calls which EDCTP launched in 2006 on prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and capacity building for HIV vaccines. Irish Aid have placed no restrictions on how this funding should be allocated other than that it should support excellent research and capacity building within the scope of the EDCTP remit.
