EDCTP usually aims to complete the total review procedure for all grant schemes (with the exception of the Small Grants Programme) within approximately 5 months of the deadline for submission of proposals.
Integrated Projects, Networks of Excellence & Senior Fellowships
- Registration and acknowledgement of receipt
All received applications will be registered in a database by EDCTP. Every application receives a unique Project code, which will be stated in all correspondence with the Project Coordinator. Within 1 week after the deadline for submission, EDCTP will send the Project Coordinator an acknowledgement of receipt of the proposal per email. - Eligibility check
EDCTP will check whether proposals meet the eligibility criteria as stipulated in the call text. Proposals may be excluded from further processing when they fail to meet any of the eligibility criteria. Applicants will receive a letter on the outcome of the eligibility check within 4 weeks after the deadline for submission. - Internal and External Reviews
The core of EDCTP review procedure is formed by a peer review procedure involving both External Reviewers and a project-specific Scientific Review Committee (SRC).
All eligible proposals submitted before the deadline will always be reviewed. Proposals are peer reviewed in parallel by independent External Reviewers and Scientific Review Committee (SRC) reviewers. These reviewers are often experts in the relevant disease-specific field and in ethics. Applicants will be given the opportunity to respond to the External Reviewers comments and their responses will be taken into consideration by the SRC. The SRC will provide recommendations for funding and a ranking of proposals. This ranking is then discussed by the EDCTP Partnership Board (PB), which makes a recommendation on funding to the EDCTP General Assembly (GA). The General Assembly makes the final decision on funding. All successful applicants will then be invited to enter the Grant agreement procedure.
This process is depicted in the diagram below:

Review procedure of ethics proposals
The review procedure for the ethics grant scheme is very similar to the process described above for Integrated Projects, Networks of Excellence and Senior Fellowships. However, the following exceptions apply to the ethics grant scheme:
- There are no cofunding requirements for ethics grants
- Ethics proposals will only be reviewed by the Scientific Review Committee (SRC) reviewers and not by External Reviewers.
Review procedure of Joint Programme Activities (JPA) proposals
The review procedure for the JPA grant scheme is very similar to the process described above for Integrated Projects, Networks of Excellence and Senior Fellowships. However, the following exceptions apply to the JPA grant scheme:
- Submitted applications will be reviewed by a panel of members from EDCTP constituencies (2 members of the DCCC, 2 members of the ENNP and 2 members of the PB). The review committee will only review the added value of its support and validate the joint programme criteria of the proposal
- The JPA proposals will not be reviewed by external reviewers.
