Editorial ‘EDCTP: a genuine north-south partnership’ (TM&IH)

The November issue of the journal Tropical Medicine & International Health includes an editorial entitled EDCTP: a genuine north-south partnership. The editorial describes EDCTP’s approach to strengthening clinical trial capacity in sub-Saharan Africa, including an overview of achievements to date and a look into the future. PanACEA had its kick-off meeting in Moshi, Tanzania, 10 and 11 October, 2009

PANACEARepresentatives of 11 African clinical trial sites and 3 European Universities, representatives of EDCTP, and pharmaceutical industry met for a kick-off of this new Consortium.  Intensive and constructive discussions were held on the science, the governance, the timelines and the capacity development aspects of the sites.  They were very nicely hosted by the KCRI, the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute, in Moshi, through it Director and site PI, Dr. Gibson Kibiki. And it rained…

After some disappointing amounts of rain fell during the mvuli (short rains), on Saturday finally the rain came pouring down. Even EDCTP staff from the Netherlands (a rainy country by default) were welcoming the dark clouds surrounding Mount Meru.

Underreporting of clinical trials conducted in Africa is a serious problem, leading to wasteful duplication of research. According to Amber Abrams, the Pan-African Clinical Trials Registry (PACTR) project manager for the South African Cochrane Centre at the Medical Research Council, the lack of coordinated regulation and ethical oversight of clinical trials in Africa largely accounts for this scenario. From 12 to 14 October, policy makers, researchers, scientists and other stakeholders will be in Arusha, Tanzania locked in serious discourse on the state of clinical trials on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. During the Fifth European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Forum they will discuss the latest developments, identify gaps and plan on the way forward.
