Customization and strengthening of the IHI-IRB capacity to regulate health research ethics

Project Coordinator: Ifakara Health Research and Development Centre (Beverly Msambichaka)
Location: Tanzania
Budget: € 49,951
Duration of the project: March 2011-January 2013

This two-year project addresses the following areas of capacity building: operational needs for storage space, an effective electronic data management and archiving system, and contribution towards personnel costs; implementation of a Health Research Ethics (HRE) including the need for clinical trial community HRE awareness events, and support of oversight visit; training of investigators, Institutional Review Board (IRB) members as well as field workers. The project has successfully organised three trainings for IRB members and investigators from the Ifikara Health Institute (IHI) as well as other institutions within the country. In addition, two oversights on clinical trial studies have been conducted. An electronic data management template is now in place, though updating remains the challenge with the huge volume of past data.
