Intermittent preventive treatment in children combined with home management of malaria in area with persisting high malaria prevalence in Senegal

Project Coordinator: Jean Louis Abdourahim Ndiaye (Senegal)
Target disease: Malaria
Partners: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM, UK), Ministere de la Sante et de la Prevention Medicale (Senegal), University Cheikh Anta DIOP de Dakar (UCAD, Senega)
Budget: € 199,945
Duration of project: April 2011-April 2013

The project aims to determine whether seasonal Intermittent Preventive Treatment for Children (IPTc) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine plus amodiaquine provide added benefit in populations with access to prompt effective treatment through home–based management. It also aims to determine if IPTc has previously shown effective when given for three months in areas with a short transmission season and if it is safe and acceptable when given for a longer period in areas with a longer transmission season. Finally, it will determine the cost-effectiveness of adding seasonal IPTc to home management of malaria (HMM).
