EDCTP at UNGA76 Science Summit

The Science Summit takes place online from 14-30 September 2021, around the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA76) in New York. The objective of the virtual meeting will be to raise awareness of the role and contribution of science to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will demonstrate initiatives that provide models for global science mechanisms and activities in support of the SDGs, particularly in science infrastructure and capacity building.

Opening plenary | 14 September

EDCTP’s Executive Director, Dr Michael Makanga, will speak at the UNGA76 Science Summit Opening Plenary: ‘How Science is Support the Attainment of the SDGs and how UNGA77 can do more to advance global science collaboration?’ During his talk at 17:20 CEST, Dr Makanga will provide a short overview of EDCTP and our UNGA76 Science Summit session taking place on 22 September, as well as highlighting the challenges and opportunities in developing countries for conducting global health clinical research in support of the SDGs.

EDCTP will organise a virtual meeting entitled “EDCTP: an EU-Africa partnership advancing global health research and cooperation”, which will take place on 22 September 2021. The event will be part of the second edition of the UNGA76 Science Summit around the 76th United Nations General Assembly (SSUNGA76) in September 2021.

Objectives of the session

This EDCTP session will aim to advance the broader discussion on how to ensure sustained support and advancement along the continuum of product development for infectious diseases, including scale-up, implementation and access in sub-Saharan Africa and globally, in the pursuit of achieving the health-related targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
