Professor Marcel Tanner steps down as High Representative of the EDCTP Association

28 August 2025

Professor Marcel Tanner has concluded his nearly decade-long tenure as the High Representative of the EDCTP Association, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in the organisation’s history. His tenure has been characterised by visionary insights, tireless advocacy, and a steadfast commitment to advancing global health equity through collaborative partnerships.

Joining the EDCTP Association in 2016, Professor Tanner brought with him a wealth of expertise in public health, infectious disease research, and health systems strengthening. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of EDCTP2’s growth and strategic direction. As High Representative, he served not only as a goodwill ambassador but also as a catalyst for increased visibility, garnering political support, and fostering strategic partnerships.

Under his stewardship, the Association broadened its reach significantly, particularly in strengthening ties between European and African stakeholders. Notably, Professor Tanner advocated for the broader participation of African nations within the EDCTP Association, successfully mobilising national-level commitment and integrating their research agendas into the programme’s framework. This work established the EDCTP Association as a truly global initiative and a model of equitable partnership in research and innovation.

Professor Tanner was also key in promoting engagement with the private sector, international development agencies, and like-minded organisations. His presence at numerous global health forums and high-level conferences provided the Association with a prominent voice in shaping the global health research agenda, championing the importance of investing in research for poverty-related and neglected diseases.

His strategic insights helped steer the programme through complex challenges, positioning EDCTP as a key contributor to global health. Perhaps his most enduring legacy is his vision of EDCTP not merely as a programme, but as a movement—a sentiment encapsulated in his now-famous phrase, “EDCTP is a movement,” symbolising the collective energy, shared values, and unwavering commitment of the EDCTP community.

Beyond his formal responsibilities, Professor Tanner has acted as a bridge-builder, uniting Europe and Africa through science, policy, and mutual respect. His leadership has inspired countless individuals and institutions to engage with the EDCTP cause, and his passion for equitable health solutions has profoundly impacted all who have worked with him.

In April 2024, Prof. Tanner and Dr Thomas Nyirenda visited community health workers in Rukara Village, located just outside Kigali, Rwanda.

On 14 June 2025, during a General Assembly held in Kigali, EDCTP celebrated a heartfelt farewell tribute to Professor Tanner. The ceremony brought together representatives from the EDCTP Association, Global Health EDCTP3, and European and African General Assembly members to express their appreciation for his service and legacy.

Additionally, Professor Tanner contributed significantly during the Twelfth EDCTP Forum held in Kigali from 15-20 June 2025, chairing sessions and presenting the Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize alongside Honourable Minister Sabin Nsanzimana. He also provided valuable insights to aspiring scientists as a panellist during a discussion on preparing the next generation of African research leaders.

“On behalf of the EDCTP Association Board, I would like to thank Professor Tanner wholeheartedly for his tireless commitment to EDCTP. Without his dedication as High Representative, EDCTP would not be what it is today: the best practice example of how Africa and Europe can work together in the field of research and achieve results none of us could have achieved alone. Vielen Dank, Marcel!”

Dr Henning Gädeke, Chair, EDCTP Association Board

“As High Representative, Professor Marcel Tanner played a pivotal role in transforming EDCTP into a true model of North–South collaboration. He often referred to EDCTP, in his own words, as ‘’a movement” - a reflection of his deep belief in its mission and potential. He embodies everything a high representative should be: intelligent, thoughtful, humble, and exceptionally generous with his time. Professor Tanner has a rare ability to connect with people at all levels. I fondly remember the 2016 EDCTP Forum in Lusaka, Zambia, where a short walk from our hotel reception to the venue turned into a 20-minute journey as Marcel stopped to greet former students and colleagues. That walk spoke volumes about the depth of his impact and the immense respect he commands. Marcel’s legacy is one of deep human connection, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to advancing health research and capacity building in sub-Saharan Africa. Some of Marcel’s former PhD students now hold senior positions across the continent, from government ministers to university vice–chancellors—a testament to the reach of his mentorship. I am truly privileged to have known and worked with Marcel.”
