Frequently asked questions – Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking
What is the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking?
Established under the European Union’s research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking (GH EDCTP3 JU) is a European Institutionalised Partnership between the European Union, represented by the European Commission, and the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Association, whose members are several European and African countries. It aims to deliver new solutions for reducing the burden of infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, and strengthen research capacities to prepare and respond to re-emerging infectious diseases in this region and across the world. It builds on the first and second European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership programmes (EDCTP1 and EDCTP2).
How is the GH EDCTP3 JU managed?
The governance of the GH EDCTP3 JU is led by a Governing Board, in which both the EDCTP Association and the European Commission have equal votes. The implementation of the GH EDCTP3 JU programme is ensured by a programme office, which is in the process of being established in Brussels under the leadership of an Executive Director. The GH EDCTP3 JU will be advised by a Scientific Committee and a Stakeholders Group.
What is the budget of the GH EDCTP3 JU?
The EU’s financial contribution to the GH EDCTP3 JU will be up to €800 million, conditional upon the EDCTP Association contributing at least €439 million and contributing partners, such as philanthropic organisations and industry, contributing up to €400 million.
No, there is no new call or funding available through the EDCTP2 programme. The EDCTP2 programme (2014-2020) launched 61 calls for proposals from 2014-2020 under Horizon 2020. From 2021-2025, the EDCTP2 programme moves into the phase of managing current projects through to successful completion. Please note that staff at the EDCTP Association Secretariat cannot advise on funding opportunities for the GH EDCTP3 JU programme.
Can I apply for funding from the GH EDCTP3 JU?
The GH EDCTP3 JU launched its first calls for proposals in May 2022 with a deadline of 30 August 2022. The calls for proposals are published in the European Commission’s Funding and Tender opportunities portal. An info day will be held virtually on 2 June 2022 to present the Work Programme and its funding opportunities. Further information can be found on the event page.
What are the implications of the transition for my work/research?
The transition to GH EDCTP3 JU is not expected to impact on your EDCTP2-funded research. EDCTP2 grant holders will continue to interact with the EDCTP2 programme staff at the EDCTP Association Secretariat until the closure of their grants. New applicants to the GH EDCTP3 JU programme will apply for funding via the GH EDCTP3 JU.
