Burundi joins the EDCTP Association

29 September 2025

The EDCTP Association is pleased to announce that Burundi has become its newest member country, bringing the total number of participating African countries to 31. The General Assembly of the EDCTP Association formally approved Burundi as a member on 24 September 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening regional collaboration in global health research.

By joining the Association, Burundi is now eligible for funding through the Global Health EDCTP3 programme and can contribute to the programme’s strategic direction.

Burundi will be represented at the General Assembly by Professor Joseph Nyandwi and Dr Denis Niyomwungere, both from the Institut National de Santé Publique (INSP).

About the Association

The EDCTP Association acts as the legal entity responsible for implementing the second EDCTP programme (EDCTP2, 2014–2024) and co-governs, together with the European Union (represented by the European Commission), the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking (2021–2031). Governed by its General Assembly, the Association brings together Members (Participating States), Aspirant Members, and Observers.

The EDCTP2 programme has been supported under Horizon 2020, the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, while the Global Health EDCTP3 programme receives funding under Horizon Europe, the EU’s current research and innovation framework.
