Dr Markus Moll

Dr Markus Moll joined the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) in 2017, where he works in the Global Department at the Research Cooperation Unit as a Senior Research Advisor. Within the Research Cooperation Unit, he is involved in implementing the Swedish government’s strategy for Sweden’s Development Cooperation in Research for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development 2022-2028.
He is responsible for a broad portfolio of global, regional and bilateral interventions aimed at strengthening research capacity and sustainable research environments, and at enhancing research relevant to least developed countries and regions. A particular focus is research for health, with strong engagement in improving health for vulnerable populations and in preventing and combating health threats, including pandemics and antimicrobial resistance. He has represented Sweden in the EDCTP Association General Assembly as deputy representative since 2019 and as main representative since 2024.
He is a human biologist by training and, before joining Sida, was an Associate Professor and Research Group Leader at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. He holds a PhD in virology and has 15+ years of research experience in virology and immunology. He has studied the molecular biology and virus-host interactions of measles virus, Nipah virus and HIV-1. He has been trained to work with highly pathogenic viruses and has worked in high-containment laboratories (BSL-3 and BSL-4) in Canada, Germany and Sweden.
