Prof. Claude Mambo Muvunyi

Professor Claude Mambo Muvunyi, MD PhD, is the Director General of the Rwanda Biomedical Centre and Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rwanda. He has more than 15 years of substantial expertise in clinical and public laboratory medicine, with a special focus on clinical microbiology, strengthening laboratory systems and services, health system strengthening, and improving global health security.
Prof. Muvunyi has published over 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised more than 20 PhD and Master’s students. His research interests include Health Systems Analysis and Strengthening, Integrated surveillance systems for monitoring and tracking disease burdens and risk factors, Prevention and Control of emerging diseases and risk factors, investigating and reducing the socioeconomic burdens of diseases, and developing and implementing innovative approaches for the prevention and control of diseases. He is also interested in improving the current understanding of resistance mechanisms in bacterial infections and in evaluating diagnostic methods (molecular and serological) for infectious diseases, as well as conducting operational research on diagnostic implementation and scale-up to assess the impact of new diagnostics for infectious diseases.
