EDCTP Association participates in ICGEB Board meeting in Cape Town, strengthening global health collaboration

The EDCTP Association, represented by Dr Thomas Nyirenda and Ms Michelle Nderu, attended the 32nd ICGEB Board of Governors meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, on 19-20 May 2026 as observers, underscoring the strong and growing collaboration between the two organisations. The meeting convened global representatives to advance cooperation in biotechnology, research capacity, and innovation.

The session marked an important milestone, celebrating 20 years of ICGEB’s presence in South Africa and its expanding impact across the continent through fellowships, collaborative research programmes, and strategic partnerships. Discussions highlighted the critical role of science diplomacy, innovation, and sustainable development in addressing pressing global health and development challenges.

EDCTP’s participation reflects its ongoing partnership with ICGEB, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding that promotes joint research, capacity development, and the application of advanced technologies to combat infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through its observer role, EDCTP engaged with key stakeholders and explored opportunities to better align efforts in strengthening research systems and accelerating the development of health solutions. The meeting also showcased ICGEB’s growing global reach and its role in fostering scientific collaboration for sustainable development.

This engagement reaffirms the shared commitment of EDCTP and ICGEB to advancing collaborative, science-driven approaches to improving global health outcomes, particularly across Africa.
