EDCTP site visit to Kenya

On 28 and 29 November 2022, Mr Abdoulie Barry, Director of Finance and Administration, Dr Pauline Beattie, Operations Manager, and Dr Thomas Nyirenda, Strategic Partnerships and Capacity Development Manager, carried out a review of two EDCTP projects taking place in Kenya: Revive IPTp and CDAE.

The Population Council is the coordinator of the Revive IPTp project which aims to improve the uptake of preventive malaria therapy in pregnant women in the Kisumu and Migori regions of Kenya. Working with partners at the Kisumu Medical and Education Trust, the National Malaria Control Programme, the Midwives Association of Kenya and local health divisions, the Revive IPTp project aims to reduce malaria-related mortality and morbidity in pregnant women.

The African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) is the Coordinator of the Capacity Development of Applied Epidemiologists (CDAE) project which is supporting 15 fellows undertaking Masters training in Epidemiology at institutions in Kenya. This initiative is a partnership between APHRC, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Amref International University, and Lund University. The 15 fellows will work with the Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institutions in their countries to prepare for and respond to epidemics.
