PERFECT Study: Final workshop shares key lessons for epidemic preparedness

On 30 December 2025, the final dissemination workshop of the PERFECT Study took place in Yaondé, Cameroon. Under the leadership of Professor Joseph Fokam at the Chantal Biya International Reference Centre (CIRCB) in Cameroon, the project focused on strengthening the capacity for early and reliable detection of SARS-CoV-2 in West and Central Africa and generating evidence on the performance of different COVID-19 diagnostic tests.

Key scientific discussions covered:

  • The performance of molecular and serological tests for COVID-19 in Cameroon.
  • Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and arboviruses, alongside evaluation of rapid PCR mutation assays.
  • The use of RT-LAMP as an alternative molecular testing approach in peripheral and resource-limited settings.
  • Lessons learned and recommendations to better prepare laboratories for future epidemics and pandemics.

Throughout the workshop, participants emphasised the critical importance of strong laboratory networks, innovation, and international collaboration for improving epidemic preparedness and response in Central Africa.
